Cloth Diaper Materials
Natural options
Cloth diapers come in just about every fabric known to man (except maybe pure polyester.) Cotton is probably the most prevalent and inexpensive option, and it works well for the purposes of a diaper. Other natural options include hemp, which lasts a long time and is very absorbent; bamboo, which is a green choice and also soft against the skin; flannel, fleece made from cotton, bamboo or other materials; and wool, which can be used for diapers, diaper covers or both. Wool repels water, making it popular for diaper covers.

Other fabric options There are other options for diaper fabrics, too. Sherpa, velour and windpro, a polar-fleece like fabric that is both breathable and water resistant, are great for diaper covers, especially because they're all soft and warm. If you live in a colder climate, these might be good options for chilly days where baby will need to be warm. Polyester blends hold their shape well and are quick drying and easy care. A poly-cotton blend fabric is a good option for diapers. |
Liners and absorbency
Fleece, suedecloth and terry cloth are great to use for the lining of diapers; all are great for absorbing. Another fabric, called birdseye, is like gauze and can also be used to line diapers. Some parents like to use something called "doublers," which are an extra layer of absorbent material inside a diaper. A doubler is usually a rectangle shape that fits between a baby's legs, and is great for use at night. A cloth diaper liner is another popular option for parents. Liners can be washable or disposable, and the washable ones are usually made of thin flannel. They are great for reducing soil on cloth diapers, and are usually placed between the baby's rump and the back of the diaper.
